I am not the perfect example of “good health,” but I consider that I have a fairly good state of physical, social and mental well-being. But I don't like the thought of living with dementia. Like my mum!
Good health is essential, particularly in retirement, and we must strive to eat healthily, exercise regularly and sleep well. Our bodies are not machines but should be treated as such by providing a healthy balance of proteins, vitamins, minerals, carbs, fat and water and exercise is crucial to maintain the fitness needed to fight this cruel disease. Im hoping that my 'healthy life healthy mind' approach will fight this disease. So far so good.
I was born on January 9th, 1944 and when I retired some of my older business friends said that I had now joined the Geriatric Brigade.
A few days ago, I was 80 and the word “geriatric” was raised again. My daughter said, “just because you are 80 doesn’t mean to say you are a 'geriatric dad' does it?” I said that I didn’t know, “but would look it up” and let her know. I did and wished I hadn’t! Here am I an 80-year-old geriatric attempting to physically travel 40,000 kilometres around the world. OK, yes, it is virtually, and I don't have to get wet. But it's 20k a day every day for 6 years at least!
